2015

  • O.T. Dane (Shirley 2013 – present) clocks 49.89 over the 400m at the Notts Champs. This is a new under 17 College record and breaks Simon Heggie’s 50.23 from 1992 when he finished 4th at the England Schools Champs.

2014

  • O.T. Dane (Shirley 2013 – present) goes one better than 2013 and finishes 4th at the England Schools under 17 800m with a new PB and College under 17 record (1:55.97) with still another year in the age group
  • H. Haith (Pelham 2009-2014) jumps 1.88 in the high jump – the best high jumping at Worksop for a number of years

2013

  • O.T. Dane (Shirley 2013-present) had a rather good season, setting College under 15 records at 300m (38.1), 400m (53.2), 800m (1:57.5) and 1500m (4:10.2)
  • The 400m record of 55.6 had been held by M.R. Woodcock (Pelham 1955-1960) since 1956 when he finished 5th at White City. The 800m and 1500m records had been held by Jack Buckner since 1976. Oli’s 800m time also betters Jack Buckner’s intermediate 800m record from 1978 (1:58.4).
  • Oli went on to finish 5th at the England Schools junior 1500m (the same placing as Jack Buckner in 1976 – but a few seconds quicker)

2012

  • M. Kwok (Talbot 2009-2011) jumps 14.03 in the triple jump at College sports – a 75cm improvement on the previous record held by S.D. Foster (Mountgarret 1983-1988)
  • 16 year old H. Haith (Pelham 2009-2014) runs 11.15 in the 100m at Moorways Stadium, thus eclipsing the College under 17 record of 11.20 previously set by S.D. Heggie (Portland 1989-1994) in 1992 .

2010

  • M. Lambley (Shirley 2001-2006) wins the hammer at the Loughborough International athletics meeting with a personal best of 71.70 which puts him in the top ten UK hammer throwers of all-time. Matt also competed in the Commonwealth Games held in Delhi, India and the European Under 23 Champs

2010

  • W.R.G. Foster (Portland 1971-1975) wins the 3000m at the World Masters Indoor Champs in Kamloops, Canada

2006

  • Matt Lambley (Shirley 2001-2006) wins the England Schools senior hammer title in 64.02 and finished 2nd in the junior AAAs with 67.34

2002

  • Matt Lambley (Shirley 2001-2006) wins the England Schools junior hammer title in 64.70

1995

  • W.R.G. Foster (Portland 1971-1975) finishes 11th at the Berlin Marathon in 2:15.49

1994

  • T.C. Buckner (Talbot 1976-1981) finishes 2nd in the AAA 3000m steeplechase and 5th at the Commonwealth Games in Victoria, Canada

1994

  • S.D. Heggie (Portland 1989-1994) runs 48.3 for 4th place at the England Schools 400m final in Telford. He also represents GB at under 23 level, Midlands seniors (see below) and claimed bronze medal at the AAA junior indoor championships over 400m

1993

  • S.D. Heggie (Portland 1989-1994) runs 10.6 and 21.8 for the 100m/200m at Herringthorpe with A.B. Simpson (Talbot 1988-1993) running 10.7/21.95 in the same races.

1993

  • S.T. Lewis (Shirley 1988-1993) represents Wales in the steeplechase
  • His best time at the 2000m chase was 6:02 and the 3000m 9:43

1992

  • S.D. Heggie (Portland 1989-1994) finally breaks M.R. Woodcock’s (Pelham 1955-1960) senior boy’s 400m record with 50.23 for 5th place at the England Schools Champs. However… 50.3 over 440y actually equates to 50.1/50.0 over 400m (depending on the conversion method used), so technically he never broke the record at all!

  • K.A. Gambold (Portland 1984-1989) jumps 2.00 in the high jump

1988

  • J.R. Buckner (Talbot 1975-1980) finishes 6th in the Seoul Olympics 5000m final

1986

  • J.D. Bray (Talbot 1981-1986) runs 10.88 finally eclipsing Southcott and Brierley’s 10.9 from 1948 and 1973

1982

  • D.M.W. Griffiths (Mason 1954-1960) runs a personal best of 2:26.23 at the Fukuoka Marathon, one of 4 sub 2:30 outings (the others being London twice and Seoul)

1980

  • J.R. Buckner (Talbot 1975-1980) wins the junior AAA 1500m title in 3:51.0 and sets new College records for 800m (1:53.2), 1500m (3:45.5) and mile (4:02.9)

1979

J.R. Buckner (Talbot 1975-1980) finishes runner up at the England Schools 1500m (3:51.4) to Steve Cram (3:46.2) and captains England Public Schools in Florida, running the mile in 4:15 and the 880y in 1:53.J.L.J. Levine (Portland 1973-1979) sets up new figures in the high jump with a 1.95 leap.

1975

  • M.P. Hay (Mountgarret 1968-1973) represents GB at under 23 decathlon

1973

  • M.P. Hay (Mountgarret 1968-1973) scores 5927 points in the senior decathlon whilst still a junior. His marks were: 100m – 11.8, long jump – 6.32, shot – 11.10, high jump – 1.76, 400m – 55.3, 110m hurdles – 15.8, discus 29.54, pole vault – 3.10, javelin – 50.68 and 1500m – 4:57

1973

  • R.T.N. Brierley (Portland 1968-1973) runs 10.9 for the 100m – equalling P.S. Southcott’s 10.9 (10s 100y) from 1948
  • The College 4x100m relay team clock 44.5 at the Loughborough Invitational meeting

1966

  • D.J. Burgis (Scholae 1961-1966) jumps 6ft (1.83) in the high jump at an athletics match at Ratcliffe College (2 years prior to the invention of the Fosbury Flop!)

1964

  • D.M.W. Griffiths (Mason 1954-1960) runs 49.3 in the 440y for second place at the Scottish-Irish International Athletics Meeting held in Ayr, Scotland

1962

  • D.M.W. Griffiths (Mason 1954-1960) competes in the Perth Empire & Commonwealth Games in the 880y (1:54.8 for 4th in heat 1) and mile (4:23.5 for 9th in heat 1)

1960

  • Unbeaten athletics team with victories over RAF Cranwell, Marlborough, Lancing, KES Birmingham, Denstone, Manchester Grammar and Welbeck

  • P.R. Brunyee (Talbot 1951-1955) competes at the Empire Games in Cardiff in the 120y hurdles

  • P.R. Brunyee (Talbot 1952-1956) wins the England Schools 120y hurdles title in 14.9 and finishes 4th at the AAA junior championships (2 years young)

1955

  • P.R. Brunyee (Talbot 1952-1956) wins the England Schools 110y hurdles (youths) in 14.1

1954

  • W.B. Thompson (Mountgarret 1949-1954) wins the junior AAA 200y low hurdles title in 23.6 and finishes runner-up in the 120y hurdles in 15.3.
  • Thompson finishes the season as the top-ranked UK sprint hurdler with 15.1 for the 120y hurdles (when winning the Northern Junior Champs) and 200y low hurdles for good measure!

  • P.S. Southcott (Mountgarret 1942-1947) runs 10.0 for the 100y and 23.0 for 220y at RAF Cranwell both College records (the later jointly held)
  • F.E. Stansfield (Talbot 1942-1947) runs 15.5 for the 120y hurdles at the Notts Schoolboy Championships establishing a new county and College record
  • R.H. Keay (Pelham 1942-1947) runs 51.8 for the 440y for yet another College and junior county record

1938

  • G.R.V. Dowling (Pelham 1925-1935) wins the Midland 220y title in 22.0 and runs at the British Games for Nottinghamshire

1937

  • J.S. Pinkney sets or equals 3 College records at the Sports in the 100y (10.2), 220y (23.0), 440y (53.8). He also set 21′ 3″ (6.45) earlier in the season in the long jump which lasted as a record until 1980

1935

  • G.R.V. Dowling (Pelham 1925 – 1935) runs 23.0 over 220y, breaking Heath’s record of 5 years earlier

1932

  • E. Edwardes (Talbot 1926-1932) runs 10.2 in the 100y (equal record with Heath from 1930), 24.0 in the 220y and jumps 6.11 in the long jump

1931

  • W.P. Heath (Pelham 1925-1931) wins the junior AAA 100y (10.3), 220y (23.7) and the England Public Schools 100y titles, establishing a new College record of 10.2 in the latter

1922

Records-galore at College sports:

  • J.H. Gibson (Mountgarret 1917-1923) jumps 5.92 in the long jump (38cm improvement on the previous record!)
  • W.J. Crampton (Mountgarret (1915-1924) runs 5:06 in the mile
  • L.S. Sleight (Mountgarret 1917-1922) runs 10.4 in the 100 yards (approx 11.3 for the 100m)
  • C.E. Youngman (Pelham 1918-1923) wins the half-mile in 2:16 (8 second improvement on previous record)
  • The winning height of the high jump was recorded as 1.79 – this is presumed to be an error and should be 1.48 – i.e. a foot lower…
